What's Screen Printing?
Silkscreen printing, commonly abbreviated as "screen printing", consists of five main elements: the screen printing plate, squeegee, ink, printing table, and substrate. Screen printing works on the principle that the graphic part of a mesh passes through ink, while non-graphic portions remain impervious. This creates an even surface for inking up smaller areas than usual mesh sizes allow. Screen printing begins by pressing one end of the plate into ink and applying pressure with a squeegee on its parts while moving toward its other end. Ink is transferred by the motion of the squeegee from the graphic part of a screen hole extrusion to its substrate. Due to the viscous effect of ink and its ability to fixate prints within a specific range, screen printing plates and substrates must remain in contact with each other during this step. As these lines move back and forth between them, they create what is known as rebound force on the squeegee itself. Due to rebound force, only part of the screen printing plate and substrate make contact - leaving other parts disengaged. By carefully controlling both ink and screen fracture movement, printing size accuracy is achieved, and the dirty substrate is avoided. Squeegee scraping the page clean, followed by lifting both plates, causes both inks to return to their initial positions - known as a printing stroke.
